

There's a helpful move list and practice skate park to assist in that regard. It can feel a bit overwhelming at first, even with Roller Champions' mandatory tutorial, but like any real-life sport, the game becomes easier with time and practice. Plus, there are the in-game physics to master, which dictate how a ball might roll or bounce depending on where and how hard you throw it. It's a straightforward premise, made more engaging and complex with the variety of moves at each player's disposal on both offense and defense, including multiple ways of tackling your opponents to the ground or passing the ball to a waiting teammate. There are a few entertainingly unique offerings but it's a largely drab first outing. The first roller pass-Roller Champions' version of a battle pass-isn't all that enticing. The first team to reach five points (or have the most points after seven minutes) wins. If at any point the other team manages to get the ball away from you, it breaks the streak and you'll have to fight to get the ball back in order to break your opponent's streak and begin scoring again.

If your team manages a full lap before scoring, you earn a single point, while two or three laps net you three or five points, respectively. Both teams fight over possession of a ball and then make as many consecutive laps as possible with it in hand, before then tossing it through a hoop to score points. This definitely seems like a feature that should have been included for launch (or certainly by season 1).

My understanding is that most of these issues have now been resolved and people are having a far smoother experience. I personally ran into very few glitches in my time with Roller Champions. That being said, I suspect those will be added as the game further develops. I really think 2 v 2 should be a core game mode. In the kickoff season, there were 2 limited time modes, one called hot potato (where you had to pass in a certain amount of time or the ball blew up), and another that was a 2v2 mode on a shorter rink. Each week, there are 3 in-match challenges to complete, and on weekends there are events. The “Roller Pass” was half the length of a normal season’s pass, and included some pretty neat cosmetics. The kickoff season was a sort of soft launch for the game. From there, you will learn various strategies and combine moves to really begin to become skilled at the game. Once this happens a few (probably dozen) times, you start to realize how important building momentum and speed is to success in the game. That is, until the first time someone uppercuts on a wall, and comes blistering down to crush you with a tackle. You will feel like you’re on top of the world.
